16v 900s have a "soft" rev limiter. It works by reducing the injector cycle to slow (and ultimately stop) the increase of RPM. 9000s seem to have a softer cycling than 900s, but they both work similarly.
The only way to get around this is to reprogram the ECU to have a different rev limiter, or to use aftermarket engine management to control the injectors. The trick of jumping the fuel pump relay only works on 8v cars with CIS, so far as I know... I suppose it could work on early '85 16v cars, but that seems screwy to me... I don't know...
