The drop in does NOTHING for the engine...the source of filter restriction is the canister and pipe bends itself. The stock system shows a 20" water restriction or more at WOT above 4000 rpm...at least my 87 900T does with GP6 apc turbo mods, etc.
Even without any filter element in the stock canister it shows this restriction. The K&N cone filter is good at eliminating restriction for all practical purposes but then you have to clean the filter. And the filter lets too much dirt through IMHO.
At one time I had a cylindrical GP6 K&N filter installed on my 87...it adapted directly to the amm. I used an amsoil foam filter stock insert stretched over the K&N and never had to clean the K&N...just clean the amsoil filter which is clearly superior. But the amsoil foam broke down in 5 years (got a new one free) and the rubber adaptor for the K&N filter hardened/broke down and failed to hold onto the amm, so I went back to the stock filter. Couldn't get the K&N rig replaced because I bought it at GP6 and they were out of business.
So put on the K&N filter if you must, but try to find a foam filter overpack...cleaning K&N filters is not my idea of fun and they don't filter very well in any case.
