I have a 78 99t. The radiator was wasted in it, so while at the 2000 SOC, I bought a new one(old stock)
When I got home I was very excited to install it, but while drilling the mounting holes for the coil I (like an idiot) ruptured 3 cores. After I finished swearing, I decided to try to fix it. Let me first mention I am also a new homeowner, and over the past 8 months I got a crash course in soldering plumbing joints.
I took out the radiator and put it on my workbench. I was trying to figure out a way to clean the area of paint before I soldered it. I eventually just burt the paint off with my propane torch. After the area was paint free, I crimped closed the damaged area with needle nosed plyers, and applied flux to the area. Next came the torch and the solder. Be careful not to get the area too hot, but also make sure the solder penetrates. People say not to use the flux, and use flux cored solder, but I think the flux draws the solder in without excess heat.
I let it cool by itself for 20 min, then I painted the area black. I installed it in the car, and it has worked fine ever since.
I say, give it a try.
