For the most common oil leaks it isnot neccesary to pull the engine. These can all be addressed with the engine in place. There are 4 places to look in the area you describe. The valve cover gasket is a simple procedure. The next place to look is the o-ring that seals the distributor to the cylinder head. Both the valve cover gasket and the distributor o-ring are rubber and become hard over time due to engine heat. After awhile they lose thier sealing capability. Another common source is the distributor itself. The internal seal goes bad and oil is allowed to run up the shaft into the distributor cap. The only way to repair this is to remove the distributor and buy a rebuild kit. My distributor leaks here. Since the car runs and it is a minor leak I leave it alone. The final place is at the joint between the cylinder head and the engine block. Right below the area where the distributor is bolted. The engine oil from the cylider head drains into the block at that point. To seal this leak you need to remove the cylinder head and replace the headgasket. This is an area that always develops a slight seepage of oil. This is of minor concern and is always damp with oil.
