The time to R&R a transmission should be about 10 hours, less if the mechanic knows what he's doing. Quite a bit of time can be saved by dropping it out the bottom as opposed to pulling the engine. This is the part that you can do yourself and save lotzabucks.
Figure maybe 5 hours to tear down and rebuild the transmission, again, assuming the mechanic knows what he's doing, less if he's real good.
So maybe 15 hours total times whatever shop rate you're getting ($50-60/hr?)
The cost for parts depends on what's wrong inside, but $1100 seems pretty steep. When I did the transmission on my '88, the parts were $250 and labor $150 for the rebuild, but I wouldn't bet on getting things that low. The chap I go to has pretty low overhead and works fast.
