My 85 900 turbo with almost 210k has done this since I got it i think, but it's just recently that I've gotten it running good enough to tell for sure. When I really put my foot in it, it will begin to boost normally (like my old saabs), but then it will hit a flat spot and not go any higher. When it does this, it sort of sounds like it isn't firing quite right, and kind of feels like there's some blow-by type thing going on somewhere. HOWEVER, EVERY GREAT ONCE-IN-AWHILE, I'll go to pass someone, and the car will boost so freaking hard, my hair gets ripped out. I'm serious, every once in a great while, it will accellerate so hard out of nowhere, it's scary. It is faster at those points than any SPG i have ever driven. It only happens once or twice a month though, and I drive about 3,000 miles a month. The rest of the time, it just feels jittery and unwilling under boost. Also, the other day, I was going up a hill at about 33-35 mph in 4th gear, and when i stepped on it a little, i heard some valve chatter. Maybe i've been lucky, cuz I've had 4 or 5 900 turbos and not experienced this before. Furthermore, I just replaced the water pump (with your combined help), and it ran really cool for a few days, then it started running warm again. Could all of this be symptomatic of the timing being off? I know that in my 73 VW Thing, I have to make sure that the timing is dead-on, or the engine will run hot. Is this true also with my saab? Please help, I would hate to ruin this car. It's been very good to us. If there's any other observation-type info I can supply to diagnose this, ask me and I'll tell you. I pay very close attention to my cars and never let a strange sound or smell go un-noticed. Thanks in advance, Matt
