Well, as i said before my trans died the other day.. well, i made it home but i live in an apartment and i work on it at my girlfriend's house.. about 18 miles away. I had to get it back and i was confident that it would make it. Well, it did but with lots of noise and reverse locking up becuase metal was in the gears. Tim (my girlfriend's father and excellent mechanic) told me to try drain the gearbox, pull out whatever metal was in there with a magnet and it might buy me a week or 2 on the car. Well, i did this and i pulled out enough metal shavings to fill up a half a coffee mug. Not to mention big peices of metal that even were as big as some of my fingers (bearing retainer pieces) and other little ones as big as 2 thumbnails, etc. We flushed out the gearbox with parts cleaner or something that he had and i thought i got everything out. (Mind you at the time, i didnt know the bearing had exploded and i thought maybe some teeth had broken and i could pull them out and run it) Well, we ran the car through the gears on the jack and it seemed better than it had been. Well, in the end we put mtl in it again and i reversed it out of the driveway. It locked up.. i tried it around the block and it was fine. Then i had him try it and we were driving and then 2nd gear was IMPOSSIBLE to get into and then after trying for a while and giving up, 3rd gear dissapeared and only worked upon decelleration.. joy. Finally everythign went to hell when it wanted to be in 2 gears at once and then it was in gear in neutral. The clutch was probably toasted by this point since i can smell it. The best part is that we got stuck at the bottom of a hill from his house. We couldnt move more than 2 feet before the whole thing would lock up, give me whiplash, make lots of noise and jump 3 feet. We ended up pulling it up the hill with a van and a chain and pushing it in to the driveway. Well, i think that should be a record for the most destroyed transmission. I didnt even beat on it. I put about 1000 miles on it since i bought it and took it to Saabtoberfest even! We determined that either the pinion bearing retainer blew up and the bearings moved to one side. The shaft moved out of position and gears were coming in contact where they shouldnt and vise versa. Also, the 2nd gear syncro exploded too I think...
