Kurt,
The typical whining noise that a saab 5 speed transmission makes is usually caused by a worn out pinion bearing. This bearing is the last bearing before the differential and takes a lot of load.
As background. the trans is basically a pair of parallel shafts with various gears mounted on each. The primary shaft is connected to the clutch via a set of drive chains. The opposite end of the other shaft, the secondary shaft, is geared to the Differential. When you move the shift lever around you are actually moving various gears along the shafts causing a particular pair to mesh together giving you a turning ratio between the shafts. In first gear it may be something like 4:1, where the input shaft turns 4 times for every revolution of the secondary. In fifth, its more like 1:1 or slightly overdrive .9:1. The pinion bearing, which is actually a pair of conical bearings, holds the end of the Secondary shaft where it passes through the trans casing heading on to the differential casing.
The typical symptom is a rapidly accelerating whine, heard most distinctly when starting from a stop. In most cases, once the car gets moving, various other noises tend to mask it. I have seen one that was making a distinct grinding noise, but that one was quite far gone.
If you think you need to replace yours, I saw that Swedish Dynamics has an upgrade kit that replaces the smaller stock pinion with a larger stronger one. I have no experience with it, but it looks like a good idea.
