Lyle,

I am right in the middle of becoming familiar with outside mirrors! I will be trying to fit 85's to an 89. I am painting a set to match my SPG body panels. I should be able to tell you by this evening if there are any hangups. They are easy to change. Remove interior door panels. This exposes the entire interior trim piece opposite the mirrors. A small round black plastic fastener with a center pin should be visible. Either remove the pin or push it in. This allows you to remove the trim piece exposing two screws that hold the mirrors on. There will also be an electrical connection disconnect to unplug after you remove the screws.

You may not need a whole new mirror however. On the bottom of the mirror is an oval hole. By pushing the mirror manually, you should be able to line up some white plastic with gearlike teeth with the hole. (until you move it, black rubber is what you'll see) With a small screw driver inserted in the teeth, and its handle hitting the oval hole, pry the white
over to one side. This releases just the inner mirror piece, giving you access to the mechanism inside. Four small screws hold the motor assembly in place. You may have some repairable problem with this mechanism. It is worth a look in my opinion. Installation is the reverse. Hold, the mirror in position, and pry the teeth back in the reverse direction. It is a rotating ring that locks the mirrored piece itself. It will be clearer when you see the mechanism. One more thing... My 89 has heated mirrors, the 85 didn't. I am going to be trying to only use the 85 shells that I painted, and put all of the 89 guts inside, so I don't lose the heated part. I let you know if I learn anything more that would help you.

Regards,

John
