That's weird, it's illegal to sell a cat from a salvage yard. anyway, if you have it out, you should be able to see if it is clogged at all. The ceramic "grid" looks like a honeycomb, it usually does not clog, it may however melt at high temperatures in the case of backfiring, so look to see if the leading edge (toward the engine) is melted at all. small amounts of this should be OK, but if it is one solid block and won't let exhaust through you shouldn't use it. My guess is that it is fine...
