Trevor, did you ever get that piece apart? It really is quite easy. There is a long pin that holds the reverse sleeve in place and that actually, when activated by the sleeve, allows for teh reverse move. Anyway, with the shifter out of the car, push the point sticking out of the bottom of the shifter into the body and you'll see that the pin moves up. (it should have a 90 degree bend in the top.) All you have to do now is unscrew that pin. The old 99s had more of a knob than a sleeve and I think that if you are going to put leather on the shifter or something, that knob would look a lot better...
