Bless all here. absolutely could NOT keep my 92 9kT w/dreaded TCS alive, well and surprisingly fast (for an aging 4-door w/180-k miles on the clock) ;).
months ago w/advice from here, on my new-to-me toy i marked off and drilled hole in trans case to change out fluid (had replaced motor/trans mounts, chk'd shifter alignment under trans boot w/drill rod and still had sticky engagement to first from rest and a little scrunch going to 2nd ). drilling slowly w/cordless and oil in trans ensured all metal chips outbound. tapped w 27 tpi pipe tap, fitted female hex head pipe plug for (close to) flush fit. filled trans-2.5 qts? w/Amsoil racing 20/50 syn. per Townsend.
to me, the change of oil and the drilling, tapping was worth the trouble as i do most of my own work if i can and was able to blunder thru this. she shifts better--hard to quantify, but is crisper, feel seems enhanced, not really any faster between gears, but lost the 1-2 scrunch and sticky/reluctant engage-from-rest behavior. i think an improvement was wrought. if later all my trans seals dissolve or my synchros seize, i'll have to rethink.
first rate automobiles--altho it seems helicopter maintenance required at times. best to my distant friends, kimball mcginty 92 9kT.
