you are supposed to use sealant in several places on the valve cover gasket. Mainly you put the sealant where the little rubber "half moons" are. There are basically four spots, two on each end, where the gasket deviates from being a straight piece of rubber. This is where you use the sealant. There is one place where the seal bead is longer: On the rear of the timing side, closest to the upper motor mount, the bead circles all the way around to the back side, and ends where the timing buldge ends before it straightens out.
I used "red" silicone sealant on mine and I have even removed and refitted the cover twice without replacing the gasket, I just renewed the silicone sealant. So far, NO LEAKS!!!
