an equally horrible repair procedure to fix it.

The shift knob is not screwed on as you probably have found out. If it is way off, someone must have felt it was loose and tried to turn or forced it down tight or have glued it in place.

If the knob is on tight, then I would suggest just peel off the shift pattern trim and re-glue the trim to the proper position.

Use a small screw driver, put some masking/electrical tape over the screw driver blade, use due care not to scratch anything, slowly pry the trim from the bottom, all the way around (you may not need to go all around). The trim should come up.

Turn the trim to the orientation you want and glue it there. You may not even need to add glue as the glue/tape is somewhat reusable when I did mine a few years back on my '95 Aero.
