My highbeams finally quit for good, for a while they went on after a couple tugs on the stalk but now nothing. I popped open the relays in the fuse box in the engine compartment: The tall orange one with only circuits in it, which I have heard had problems with solder joints cracking, had no cracks that I could see, but I re-soldered all the joints just to be sure. The wide red one with two electromechanical relays in it, had a wire that appeared to be loose for one of the solenoids, I re-soldered that - no joy. It had what looked like some burned contacts in it, so I paid $75 for a new one (non-returnable), only to find that that didn't fix the problem.

Can anyone suggest anything else? Should I go ahead and replace the tall orange relay? Is there any other relay that is bad? I know the lights are okay, I can manually move the solenoid in the short red relay with the car on and get the high beams to turn on. Does this sound like the stalk? The car is a '93 CSE-t, I haven't heard of the stalk failing. Thanks!
