Pete,
The reason why they are cheaper from Countries like Thailand is because they are COPIES. The conterfeiter does NOT have any investment in Research or development. He does not have to do ANY of the extremely expensive things, like securing government approvals and certifications for emissions and fuel economy that the original manufacturer has to do. All he does is just buy ONE and copy it. So HIs total investment is about $250. Not the MILLIONS that the original manufacturer has to spend.
Yes you can buy things cheap from Thailand.. all COPIES. HOWEVER - have you ever seen anything that was INVENTED in countries like Thailand? NO. Because they cannot recover the investement money. You would spend millions only get to actually sell ONE, and would get stolen and copied.
Sorry to rant and rave, but as an engineer, it makes me REALLY cranky when people brag that they can buy a copy cheaper than buying it from the original supplier who had to spend millions of dollars producing it in the first place.
