Got a few minutes? This may take a while...
A few weeks ago, during one of New York's recently rare cold snaps,
I noticed a new noise in my old 9000 (91, 149k mi). A squeaking sound appeared whenever I turned my steering wheel. The noise appeared to be coming from just behind the steering wheel, where the wheel joins that dashboard extension thingy which houses the turn signal and wiper control stalks. The wheel seemed to bind, too, but not always in concert with the squeaking.
Today, things got worse, the binding got to be more than momentary. I checked the power steering fluid reservoir and the level was below the "add" mark. (it's never been low before). I got some fluid and added some to just below the max mark. No difference. After a 20 mile drive the steering got to be downright scary. It was as responisve as if the engine were not running at all. The pump seems to be working, as some movement of the fluid in the reservoir is evident as the wheel is turned lock to lock) No leak is apparent,but the pressure hose does have an oily look to it.
What's going on? Has the rack bit the dust? Is the squeaking sound related, or just an unhappy coincidence? Is this gonna cost me an arm and various other body parts? (Since I'm a city dweller with no driveway or shade-tree of my own, how long should it take a competent indie to change out the rack, if that's the problem?)
