Thanks for the quick reply. I found your previous post on the T5 adaptation functions easily (the "more by...." feature rocks!) and it was very informative.

The plugs are currently the stock NGK plugs for a non-turbo 2.3l. I know they were installed by the local dealer because the previous owner took the car there for every service listed in the book on time and just said "take care of it and give me the bill" - they loved him! I still can't figure out why they didn't repair a couple of obvious things, though, like bad motor mounts, that I found when I bought the car given that they had a blank check to work with....

The knocking sound is pre-ignition knock or detonation - I've heard it enough times in enough cars to know what it is - and it comes in a revs below 3000 on anything over 1/2 throttle when the car is hot. I changed to the cooler thermostat, which helped the post-highway heat soak a bit, but the real test of summer is coming soon. I'll probably install the lower temp fan switch too, if I can get the stupid wire connector on the old switch to release.

I had good success in my previous car (Miata) running one heat range cooler when I had knock problems with that car, although higher octane gas cured that too. But at the cost of gas these days I really don't want to buy premium.

Oh, I forgot to mention the car has 187k miles, still on the original timing and balance chains. They are a bit noisy on startup but that goes away.
