Cars end up at auction a bunch of ways.
Almost all leased cars are sold at auction when they come off lease. So most all resold leased cars came through auction. Given the year and mileage of yours, this doesn't apply.
Quite often a dealer that takes a car in trade that they don't sell will auction it off. For example, a Buick dealer takes a Saab in trade. They don't service or sell Saabs. If it's very clean and low mileage, they may leave it on the lot for a month or so to see if it gets any activity. If not, they'll auction it off. If the car isn't clean or isn't low miles, they'll just send it off to auction. The Buick dealer doesn't have the expertise to service it, so they just want it gone.
Cars that go through banks or insurance companies will be auctioned. That includes repossesed, wrecks, that sort of thing. I doubt repossessed, given the mileage. That car was paid off long ago. If someone bought it used and defaulted, it probably didn't have many miles as a repossession.
It could have been totaled, but there are ways to check for that, other than carfax. Is the paint fresh? Is the car unusually clean? A repaired wreck will look 'unnaturally' clean and fresh for a 8 year old car with 100K miles. Cars with flood damage can be auctioned, but again, the car interior has to be extensively cleaned.
Unless the car is unusually clean, I'd assume it was traded in at a non Saab dealer.
Use other ways to try and trace the car. Be a detective. Check the door for oil change stickers. Any papers left in the glove box, under a carpet, or trapped behind the rear seat or under the spare? Any of that may give you some idea of where the car came from.
Good luck!
