I used to experience a very annoying noise coming from the bottom of my windshield near the top of the dash on the driver's side. It would start at cruising speed (around 55 - 60 mph), and would increase in loudness as my speed would increase. It sounded just like the way you described your noise to be.

At first, I was sure it was my windshield wiper blade/arm/refill. I would hear the sound, and then turn on the windshield wipers, but the sound persisted. This led me to believe that maybe it was not the wipers, since it should have disappeared when the wipers would move across the glass.

I brought it to a Saab dealer, and they said that my windhsield had been replaced (before I purchased it). They said it was a genuine Saab windshield, but that it was not centered correctly (a little off to the left), and that was probably the cause of the noise.

Well, I had to have my blower motor replaced (by the same Saab dealer, under warranty, thank goodness) due to a whistling noise it was producing (driving my car was definitely becoming a headache...) because the motor was dying, and guess what? The windshield noise is now gone! I have no clue if the two were related, but the noise is gone now.

I don't know if any of this helps, but it sounds very similar to what you are experiencing.
