Could be the battery, strange as it sounds...

I had a similar experience in my own 9000 some time ago, though not as severe as yours. I had just been to have the battery checked at a battery/exhaust/etc. shop, strangely enough, as I'd had the car fail to start earlier that day. The battery was fine, according to the guy who tested it, and he just about refused to sell me another! The car started easily and I set off. As I was braking to approach a roundabout, everything electrical died and the engine cut out briefly. Then it all came back and everything was fine.
I was booked into the dealer the next day anyway (it started OK, I seem to remember) so I had the battery tested. The battery was proclaimed faulty and I had a new one fitted. Pity it had to be at dealer price, but it has given no trouble since (about two years).

I believe the explanation is that batteries commonly fail these days from a build-up of conductive sludge at the bottom. This sludge is electrically conductive and eventually it can short the plates and cause trouble. I believe this happened when I braked and the sludge sloshed about.

It is likely that it was the stopping for fuel rather than the fuel itself that made the difference to your car.

However, as Evil Twin Skippy says, the alternator is a possibility. You say your alternator belt is squeaking. Are you sure it is the belt? Does it happen all the time or only at certain times?
