Serge,
According to my '96 Saab 9000 owner's manual (and the Haynes manual confirms this), the engine number is stamped on front of the engine block (for '94-on 2.0 and all 2.3 engines).
It appears to be about half-way down near the transmission.
Having said that, I haven't been able to find it on my engine, which was replaced from a written-off '97 Aero. Perhaps the number was removed for legal reasons (quite possible here in the UK).
