I'm a Saab lover and I'm in the car business. One of the things I do is read between the lines. Is $2,000 about what you're looking to spend? If so, you're unlikely to be looking at cars with a service history. Things like working AC are often a luxury--what you're looking for is a decent engine/trans/drivetrain. A $2,000 Saab is probably going to be a constant headache for your son's modest means--everything is expensive. While I agree that an Accord or Camry is a good car, the problem is they are too good. You don't get much of a one for that kind of money--and they tend to have structural rust at that age if you live in the salt belt. Volvos are also good but again expensive to buy and own. One car I think might work well is a VW Golf or Jetta. They have the feel of a European car, they are pretty safe, they are easy to work on yourself and parts new and used are easy to find. Other options might be some of the "also ran" Japanese cars like Mazda, Nissan, Subaru etc. I just bought a really nice Mazda 626 in beautiful condition (only 117,000 miles) that I'm selling for $2,850, so you should be able to find something like that. Saabs are wonderful cars, but not the best thing for someone on a tight budget. Good luck.
