First, I'd be wary of any non-graduated graphs with no quantitative designations other than "excellent" or "poor," and no filter part numbers.

Amsoil wants you to buy their filters and publish information on their website leading one to believe K&N's don't filter well, yet K&N claims their filters meet OEM specifications (10-20 microns). My experience with K&N leads me to believe they filter very well, as I have one on my Harley-Davidson and also my '95 Aero. K&N is the standard upgrade filter sold by Harley-Davidson that 99% of owners convert to, and I can assure you HD would not sell this filter if it didn't filter properly.

About once per year I clean and re-oil the Harley filter and I've never seen any evidence of leakage or dirt on the filtered side of the carburetor. The Saab's filter, OEM replacement #E-9060, gets cleaned and re-oiled about every two years and my experience is the same with it: No evidence of dirt escaping past the filter either by visual exam or several lab tests on the oil after extended drain intervals. If dirt is getting through the filter some silicone will be present in the oil, and I've never seen any significant amounts in three oil tests.

The problem with the K&N is that they don't list an OEM-replacement filter for any Saab newer than '95, although they do have the type that replace the OEM filter and are exposed in the engine compartment. I haven't been a fan of this type of filter since they inhale hot air from the engine compartment, which isn't a good thing for performance. You want the intake air to be as cool and dense as possible.

I'm not aware of any physical differences between the air-filter enclosures of '95 and '96 9K's. Since Fram air filters show the same part number for your car and mine ('95 Aero), I'm confident the E-9060 will fit your '96 Aero, but if you're interested in the K&N it wouldn't hurt to call K&N first to confirm.
