The original 99 engine was designed by SAAB engineering and manufactured by Triumph for SAAB. I had a '72 99 that had the Bosch J-Jettronic injection system. It was a great car from almost every perspective, particularly for its day. Reliable, solid as a rock, four wheel disk brakes, front wheel drive, an unparalleled factory rustproofing, etc. It was my first SAAB and ugly as it was, hooked me on SAABs to this day.

Anyway, SAAB did replace this engine with its own 2.0L in 1973. Triumph was then left with an engine that was substantially more modern than its pushrod 4 (and almost every other engine designed for British Leyland car makers at the time). They then proceeded to build the ("modern wedge design?")TR7 around the old SAAB 1850. They used Lucas (Prince of Darkness) electrics, downdraft carbs, British gaskets (sorry to the English for the dig, but I've worked on and owned English sports cars from the '50s, '60s, and '70s for over 3 decades - still have a 1959 MGA), and produced a car that had poor reliability, leaked oil, and was distained by everyone who I knew who every came in contact with one.

The only major problem I ever had with the '99 was its appetite for pinion bearings - Agh, those SAAB transmissions. I drove it until a head-on wreck took it out (other driver's fault). My two year old daughter who was in a car seat in the back and I got out without a scratch.
