Whoever told you that silica was used as a thickening agent to produce silicone grease did not know what they were talking about. Silica is SiO2, i.e., sand or quartz and is the same abrasive material used on many sandpapers and grinding appliances.

Silicone grease is a higher molecular weight formulation of silicone polymers (larger polymer molecule) than silicone oil. The relative viscosities are controlled by the MW, not thickeners - certainly not silica.

I scuba dive also, and yes, silicone grease is used on the seals because it does not oxidize. Is is a colorless translucent material and is probably what you bought.

Smear it on the boots of the DI. It is not necessary to cover the entire spark plug with the grease. You may, however, want to use some high temperature antiseize (not silicone grease) on the first two or three threads of the plugs.
