The 86 seems to plagued by this problem . It is caused by a different in the circuit resistance between left and right wiring/bulbs in any one of :(1) Brake lamps (2) Rear lights (3)Low beams .
Usually (1) or (2) is the culprit . Any corrosion at any electrical connection anywhere in the circuit causes an imbalance in the current through a relay that makes the pictogram illuminate . Each of these 3 relays has 2 windings wound in opposite directions . One winding is connected to the left bulb and circuit & the other winding connected to the right . If both filamints are good (and the resistance of the wiring and connectors are equal) the two windings are energized but because they are wound in opposite directions they cancel each other out and the relay DOES NOT OPERATE . If one filamint is burned out or broken the current to that winding of the relay is interrupted and the other energized , unopposed , winding causes the relay to operate.
You will note the filament monitor will not show anything amiss if both L&R filamints are burnrd out .
Unfortunately any variation in resistance between L&R circuits , including a simple thing like different brand of bulbs will give a false operation of the warning relay .
A good place to check is the back of the 2 tail light assy. where there are "Buss Bars" that have small metal bars pushed into V slots that often corrode . I soldered all these points in both tail lights and that cured the problem for a while . Now that it has returned ,I plan to check the wiring connectors but I am learning to live with it !
Hope this helps ! Jag behover lite preventivmedel !!
