Software can be fun... (rather long, as usual)

... especially when it comes from someone like Maptun and is downloaded into the Trionic ECU of an already-modified Aero.

My '96 Aero (manual) already had the JT exhaust system that is part of the Stage 2 upgrade. I've also reworked teh airbox as described in an earlier post.

After a slight hiccup due to Maptun and I getting our wires crossed somehow (ever driven an Aero LPT with a "check engine" light? It's actually not a slow car...), my Stage 2 Aero ECU finally arrived today. I fitted and tested it in my lunch break and while the car appeared faster, with boost remaining constant right to the red line, it somehow didn't live up to my expectations. The boost level, especially, didn't look like 1.5 bar on my factory gauge (I didn't have my aftermarket gauge fitted). I tried an adaptation run, but couldn't do any more than one as there was too much traffic. Slightly disappointed, I went back to work and e-mailed a couple of SaabNetters who I knew had had Aero ECU upgrades to ask for the benefit of their experience (sorry, guys!)

I was running on my usual 98 RON (93-94 AON?) fuel.

Anyway, later this evening I got the chance to floor it a few times and it seemed to be reaching higher boost and taking off rather bettter. So I fitted the boost gauge and went out for some more adaptation runs. On the first run, I saw the gauge hit 1.5 bar (Maptun claim 1.5-1.6) so I knew I was onto something. Subsequent runs showed I could momentarily hit 1.6 bar and I was very happy.

On the way back from the last adaptation run, I think I rather surprised the driver of a Viggen convertible behind me while joining a dual carriageway (think "two-lane highway") from what many of you would call an "on-ramp".

I have two "problems" with this ECU:

1. Its power delivery is smoother than with the standard Aero ECU, and this can actually make the car feel *slower*! I'll have to keep an eye on the speedo...

2. Despite having no boost limit in 2nd gear (at my request), I experienced *no* wheelspin whatsoever (not in a straight line, I got some while getting over-enthusiastic on bends). Maptun estimate I will be getting 450Nm (330lbft) of torque at 3000rpm and even if I was getting a bit less than that in today's 20C (68F) weather, it still speaks well of the Abbott suspension, SuperFlex bushes and Bridgestone S-03 tyres. The downside, though, is that my transmission (manual) has no wheelspin to act as a "torque relief valve" and I'm sure I'll see a failure somewhere down the line. I didn't even feel any torque steer!

I'm sure I could have spun the wheels in 1st, though, since I could do that before the upgrade. Boost in 1st gear is limited to base, but Maptun told me to expect more power than standard since ignition timing is advanced over standard. Standing starts seem a bit more confident, with fewer occurrences of "bogging down", so they're probably right.

Anyway, I'll be taking an 80-mile round trip across country tomorrow and I hope I don't see too much traffic (although I need to practice overtaking!) I'll also try to get some timings to quantify the performance. I don't do 1/4 miles, though.

I thoroughly recommend Maptun's products and their excellent service. The day I realised I had the wrong software (probably partly my own fault), I e-mailed them in the evening (they're about an hour ahead of UK time), expecting a reply the next day. To my amazement, I got a reply from Johnny late that evening, and he continued the e-mail exchange until he was satisfied he knew which software I needed and promised to send another ECU the next day (I imagine he programmed the ECU that evening), saying I could return the first ECU as an exchange.

One other thing that may be of interest: my car has Saab VSS (Vehicle Security System) - the immobiliser function. Johnny told me he needed the exact serial number of my original ECU as the security system is tied to that. If the serial number in the ECU is wrong, the car will not start. He made me double-check the number.
