well if saabs elicit loathing and mechanical headaches just imagine how much more one could hate their Jaguar. With up to 12 cylinders to fail, english build quality, and parts prices it would be something if you could drive a reasonably priced one to work everyday.
But I guess if its just for image you wouldn't have to drive it everyday - just once a month would be enough.
Here in minnesota Saabs are driven by city soccer moms (new 9.3's), lawyers and retired guys (9.5's), college profeesors (old beautiful black 900S 5-doors), college students (rustier 900's), and the local Green party hippies (rusty and non-rusty 900's - sorry ETS). I only see a very few 9000's - most all look nicer than mine, but on every old-style one I check I see the front doors rusting right behind the wheel wells.
If you want to be part of any of those demographics you should probably hang on to your car. I must say that as ugly as my car is I've become emotionally attached to the "sleeper"ness of it. As I drive down the highway in my funny-looking grey 1987 car with one rear maroon back door and the words "poor man lazarus" on the bumper I imagine people think, "What a piece of shit - I'm going to pass him in my shiny new $299/month jetta." Who knows the end of that story?
If you want to draw attention here in minnesota you'd be better off buying an A4 or an S60.
