Actually, I've see these "smoothness" variations regardless of grade. I typically use premium ($.749/l here in North Bay - sorry) and get it at two different stations. Many times when it roughs up, I can go to the other station, get a fill-up and it will smooth right up. Other times, maybe not. I suspect that the distribution source is the same for both (differne delivery dates?), but I wonder from which refinery. I understand that the refineries that are down south around Sarnia are so old that they cannot even be modified to extract the sulphur from the crude stock. Down east, the Irvings spent something like $1 billion Cdn to modify their St. John refinery to extract sulphur to meet US regs since they sell in New England. After that upgrade was completed right before I moved to Ontario, I noticed more consistent performance and idle smoothness when I bought gas from the local Irving station.
Since all my engine checks have not indicated a mechanical problem, the OBD2 reads are also all OK, I can only figure that it has something to do with fuel. I might be grabbing at straws but knowing that Ontario has the highest sulphur content in the G7, I was just wondering.
