'88 9KT rolls forward while in gear & engine off - why?

This afternoon I stopped my '88 9KT 5 speed on a slight incline and shut off the motor, but did not set the handbrake. I then released the clutch and when I took my foot off the brake the car rolled forward and made a sound similar to that when bump starting. The car was in first gear at the time. It appears that the car will not hold still unless the handbrake is set. What is going on here? Thanks.
