I had similar problems and symptoms. Eventually all dash and radio lights went out. I replaced the rheostat but that didn't solve the problem. Some suggested the transistor mounted on the firewall behind the glovebox (if you pull away the carpet and underdash foam, you can see it). I found that the connector had somehow come unattached. Plugged back in and now I know how fast I am going again.
