I am wondering if anyone knows about the quality/reliability of the 1993 9kT transmission in relation to previous years. I am getting ready to upgrade the drivetrain on my 1990 to a 2.3L and would like to know whether a 91-92 transmission is better/worse. As far as I know, the only changes were gearing and some bearings, but does this make the trans stronger/weaker, or should I rephrase, more or less prone to failure??
I particularly like the 93 because of the taller gearing. This is the main problem I had with my 90 is that I always felt the gears were a bit too short. Believe me, I will have enough power to pull the gearing, thanks to turbo, computer, fuel, and exhaust upgrades!
BTW, I have also thought of swapping a newer drivetrain (94-up) with the Trionic, but I am really trying to stay on a budget here. You have to have limits or the "might as well" syndrome may take over! As it is, the 90 is already DI-APC and was made to fit both the 2.0 and 2.3, so there should be no issues with a 91-92 motor and 91-93 transmission.
Any input?? Thanks.
