Isn't the tightening torque in the 15-20 Ft-lbs range? I usually use 18 Ft-lbs. I don't think the torque would have too much of an effect on the ceramic. The torque limit is to keep the aluminum head from striping.
Is it possible the wrench is getting a little sideways when you are tightening? Use a long enough extension so that you can hold the wrench square on the plug by steadying the extension shaft.
