Anyone DIY'd AT valve body springs?

After fluid&filter changes and band adjustment the transmission is acting really nice and smooth, except that now it _always_ rams the 1st gear in very harshly when going from neutral to D. I'm betting that renewing the springs in valve body could fix it - don't exactly know which spring but I guess they sell them as sets.
The dealer service felt somehow not very eager to do the job and estimated it would be about 2-3 hours of labor. Looking at the instructions at Townsend's site it looks suspiciously simple, just a matter of opening a few screws and bolts, lifting the valve body out and removing&replacing the springs. 3 hours feels quite a long time for this...
Are there any surprises in this? Any special tools that could be needed or is a socket wrench set enough? If you've done it, how long did it take?
