Anyone DIY'd AT valve body springs?

After fluid&filter change and band adjustment the transmission acts really smoothly and nicely, except now it always rams the 1st gear in very harshly when going from park/neutral to D. I'm betting that replacing the springs in valve body could fix it. I don't know exactly which spring it it, but I guess they sell them in sets so I would just replace them all.
The dealer service shop seemed somehow reluctant to do it and estimated it would be about 2-3 hours of work. Now, looking at the docs from Townsend's site the procedure looks suspiciously simple, just opening screws and bolts, lifting out the valve body and replacing the springs. I might be able to do that by myself and maybe it wouldn't even take that long.
Are there any hazards, pitfalls or surprises here? Special tools or is a socket wrench set enough? If you've done it, how long did it take?
