Under the engine braking, I hear a high pitched noise that decreases in amplitude as teh bgaking torque drops off. At maintenance throttle (no accel or decel) it is not present or at least not audible. Under full throttle acceleration, It does not seem to be there, either. What this seems to me to be is one bearing on either the differential (shaft) or transmission output shaft. I do not know how it is put together (have not seen a manual or disassembly drawing), but I assume that the shafts (input, output, and diff) are supported by a taper roller bearings. The helical cut of the gears will allow more loading of one bearing under accel and the bearing on the other side under engine braking. The 'decel side' bearing is probably worn and that is propbably what I am hearing. What sometimes happens is that the 'decel side' is seodom engaged, and the rolling element can skid on the surface if it is not loaded enough. Like I said, this is all supposition until I can see a manual on the tranny. I am guessing I will have to order one soon enough... One wrinkle is that if Saab supported the shafts will Deep groove ball bearings at each end of the shaft, this will almost always happen on the lightly loaded ball bearing (decel side) and the other side would be fine if not overloaded or overheated. The more I think about it, I am betting this is what we have...
