I wish I would get Pilot Sports (205/55, zr16) for less than 200$!@#!@.I have posted about my success w/michelins b4. I now have 255 K miles on my aero, (incorrectly listed as 256k in previous post) , and purchased my 4th set of Michelins (2nd set of Pilot Sports) at 240k miles. Stock 1995 Aero 5 spd. Although extremely expensive (now especially after the recent "deathstone" debacle- Michelin taking advantage of it's reputation and charging major $$)My tires have lasted 80k miles per set (average, low of 77, high of 83+ k miles!!) The Pilot Sports with unidirectional (arrow type) tread have been out for over 2 years now, Michelin actually has newer models, not called pilot sports anymore (some new SAABS aeros have these newer Michelins ) . As far as performance in the wet, the type of tread the Pilot Sports have is outstanding in the wet, and actually diffuses hydroplaning like no other tread I have used. Many high perf treads have this type of tread, with their own variations. I am sure you all have seen them/used them - tread looks like this in the rollling direction >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>- huge , and long sipes. Also works very well in New England snow , since that tread works like a y- shaped
cleat. Dealer where I buy tires has always been amazed by the mileage I get out of the tires. I rotate every 5-6 k, and keep them inflated to 36 lbs at each corner. That is why I stick with them, because I get such good mileage out of them. The excellent handling characteristics, wet or dry, (for me at least) have always been a given. I will have to take a look at the tread on those Firestones that you guys cite. Though if they have similar characteristics, the dramatically reduced relative price would easily be offset by the shorter longevity.
regards-
Tom S
