Hello All,
I have encountered some difficulty w/ my 91 turbo. Recently, while driving home on the highway, the car began to surge back and forth. At a red light, the idle was erratic, well below 1000 RPM and almost stalling. I made it home and shut her down for the night. The next day, she wouldn't start at all, just cranked away.
I pulled the check engine codes and came up w/ the following:
12111 - fuel-air mixture too rich/lean
12241 - malfunctioning injectors
12112 - adaptation levels above or below given limits
I also ran the self-diagnostic feature (which is similar to pulling the codes) and could not hear the injectors click away. Instead there was a humming noise from the fuel rail. The IAC valve is fine.
I ran a jumper from the fuel pump fuse (14) to the hazard light (22) and heard the pump whine. At the time of the erratic running, I had just under a 1/2 a tank left. I have filled it w/ about 2.5 gallons since, bringing it to between 3/4 and 1/2 full (that would be 5/8). But still no start.
W/ regards to the crank sensor, while cranking the RPM gauge bounces up and down, but just above 0 RPM. What is normal for that anyway? While I have not checked the plugs, they were replaced about a month ago and both they and the DI looked good. Finally, I checked for some substantial air leaks and did not find any.
So here are my questions:
- if an injector was bad, would it prevent the whole engine from starting? The connectors look ok, but I have not checked for voltage and resistance.
- since none of the injectors clicked during the self-diag or w/ key at ON, would that suggest a communication fault w/ the LH control module, or even a bad module? Or if say, there is not enough fuel pressure, does the LH module know and not bother to run the injectors? The connection to the control module is secure.
- is there a certain gas level from which to rule out the auxillary pump? (I grew tired of the smell of gasoline after two trips to the station.)
Any insight to this would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Eric
