My experience is that the lower mounts go first, then the uppers. The crack forming sounds like your engine's been rocking around a bit. Have you heard any clunking or groaning sounds when you launch from a stop or lift off the gas? This is often caused by the engine rocking back and forth as the mounts deteriorate.

You can look at the hydraulic mounts from above, especially the rear one. If they are all greasy or the rubber is cracked, they need to be replaced. Unfortunately, the front mount is usually the first to go and it's a little more difficult to see; also, it may look fine and still be bad. You can check it by prying up on the lip of the front one and looking for excess movement. To do this requires you remove the wheel arch liner on the right side.

Townsend's web site suggests adding a piece of cut hose to the space between the bracket and the mount to help limit movement and preserve the mount a little longer. Also, look around the crankshaft pulley for signs of a leaky front main seal or leaks around the timing chain cover. These types of leaks will destroy the rubber casing on the mounts causing them to fail.

Lastly, I would not recommend substituting solid rubber mounts for the hydraulic ones as they transmit much more of the engine vibration to the chassis. I did that and upper poly bushings to my 87 and it feels like a truck. It should last forever, though!
