Although it sounds bad, it is much easier than fooling with the sunroof. You remove all of the headliner attachments, specifically:
Trim around the sunroof
Sun visors and mounting clips
Top console cover (the one with lights and fasten seat belts sign)
Grab handles and plugs on the drivers side
Dome light
Center roof plug near the hatch in the center
Weather strip around the doors (don't remove, just pull down)
Once all this suff is clear you should be able to get the headliner out. Since you are not recovering the headliner, you may be able to accomplish what you need by just dropping it down.
Once clear, you should be able to see two copper tubes emanating from the center motor area running out to the two track sections. My rattle was coming from the area where the tubes entered the track. I verified this by driving around the block with the headliner out while lugging the engine.
To fix the problem, I jammed some 1/4 inch foam (actually headliner material) in between the tube and the track and wrapped it around the tube. I held it in place with duct tape and confirmed the fix with another trip around the block.
At this point I went on to recover the headliner, but you could just put yours back.
Total time for removal: about 1/2 an hour. 5 minutes to fix the problem and probably another 1/2 hour to put it back.
If you were going to recover the headliner, I would recommend removing the rear C-pillar covers first, since you would normally recover them also and it makes the headliner easier to get out.
