I bought the same car in early 1998. I intended to keep it for a year or so and then get something else. I still have it. I like it so much that I don't even drive it in the winter.

I have had the opportunity now to dismantle and reassemble many things on this car. I replaced both shocks and struts with KYB's for a very moderate expense. I replaced the rear springs with springs from a 91T hatchback. This improved ride quite a bit, but there's still too much body roll in corners and at really high speed. I think my next project will be SAS sway bars.

Your lazy 3-4 shift could be an out of adjustment kickdown cable rather than the A spring. The kickdown cable is the vertical cable behind and attached to the throttle body. The cable is adjusted by loosening the 13mm bolt holding the sheath and moving the sheath up or down. A little bit goes a long way. My car has a lazy 3-4 shift and I have tried adjusting brake band C, replacing the A spring, replacing the governor seals and adjusting the kickdown cable. The biggest improvement came from the kickdown cable.

You might want to think about buying the A/T service manual which is available from a dealer for around $20. See Quasi's site for the part no.

And, for some bad news, read the balance chain write-up on Quasi's site for a picture of the balance shaft crank sprocket that came out of my car.
