Hopefully, the electronic equipment is protected from reverse polarity - all it takes is a simple diode. Saab is certainly smart enough to do that and, hopefully, they're kind enough to do it. The starter is no problem. The alternator diodes are probably cooked though, so I would think the alternator is toast. As Jon906 says, hook it up correctly and see what you've got. If it pulls a massive spark, disconnect the alternator and try it again (although the alternator diodes, if damaged, will surely be open-circuit, not shorted). If the gods are with you (or whoever the owner is), the alternator may be the only victim.
