I burned a hole in a piston due to incorrect timing...long story. Anyway in my case the hole appeared as if someone had put a welding torch to it, no metal dislodged and nothing floating around. If this is the situation in your case a replacement piston and new rings after removing any ridge and a new headgasket, and probably a few of the other things that you had considered doing, may be all that is reqired.
PS: I may have a spare piston but one has to be careful that the same matches the remaining ones.
