... US readers of this board. European readers are quite used to the much longer oil-change intervals that have been used here for many years and at 6000 miles, Bill is actually changing his oil twice as frequently as Saab GB recommend.

A point to make here is that many of the 200K+ mile Saabs here in the UK have had their oil changed at the recommended interval (12K miles). Many more mundane cars (e.g. Ford fleet-mobiles) make 200K miles on ordinary mineral oil, changed at 12K mile or even longer intervals. I change my spark plugs as frequently as my oil (at 12K miles), simply because I can tell the difference and they cost about £5 to change as opposed to about £35 to change the oil and filter (if I do it myself).

As far as mineral vs. synthetic is concerned, the debate is long since over here in Europe where it is recognised that synthetic oil is better if you are prepared to pay the premium (say an extra 20-30%).

I haven't known anyone change the oil in a (then-) modern car at 3K miles since the early seventies, although I believe BMW and Saab specified 3K mile oil changes for turbos into the early eighties (I didn't know anyone with a turbocharged car back then). 6K miles with full synthetic was recommended by my Saab dealer for oil-cooled turbos to prevent carbonisation of the oil in the turbo bearing. My 9000 2.0T with oil-cooled turbo was still going strong at over 200K miles on the original engine and turbo, although the gearbox was starting to fail.

I must say I don't ever smell petrol (gasoline) in my oil. The last car I had that I could smell it in had worn piston rings engine (it wasn't a Saab, and the engine was worn out when I bought the car).
