As always, shades of grey.
Hot or cold outside, it's good to let a cold engine idle at least 30 seconds after starting, just to let the oil get to where it needs to go, and start lubricating components before any load is put on. The colder it is, the longer it's going to take to get the oil moving. The use of synthetic oil helps here, because it changes viscosity less over temperature.
So what about letting the car warm up for 5 minutes on a very cold morning? Probably fine. 30 minutes? Way too much.
Quite frankly, the major reason to get the engine warmed up as quickly as possible is emissions. Cold engines produce more emissions than warm ones, and I suspect that entry in the manual is a kow tow to the EPA. There is no question that starting the car and driving it right off will warm it up faster and get the catalytic converter lit off faster, reducing emissions. It will also put more load on the engine with cold oil, which will ultimately reduce the life of the engine.
So I do my part to pollute the earth by letting the car warm for a minute or two on a cold morning, just so I can get another 25K out of the car.
