I've been changing engine oil and filter religiously every 3,000 - 3,500 miles with whatever oil they use at Saab, $24.95. I've been changing the transmision filter and fluid every 35,000 miles at Saab as well. I never ask for special fluids, whatever they generally use.
They did find some medal pieces in my transmision pan as of late, sort of half of a washer, about the size of a quarter split in two. They thought it could be a "spacer" but, the tranny keeps humming.
I do need to be gentle on the highway and backroads. I try to anticipate a downshift from 4 - 3 and let up on the gas, let the tranny do its thing, or I manually shift and away I go. In and around town, I sometimes leave it in 3rd gear.
My driving is very unusual, mostly highway from Westchester, North of NYC to Boston, Maine, Montreal, Syracuse, Southern Jersey and Manhattan, lots of long distance driving.
That's about all I do "special" to the car. I guess it's good luck and not beating on it, although I do like my high speed drives on the Northway in the mountains of the Adirondacks.
Good Luck
Jeff S
