Often the drive sprocket needs to be replaced, but the sprocket damage is a consequence of chain wear, not the cause of it. As the chain wears, the chain pitch eventually becomes so great that the rollers clash with the teeth, wearing them (and the chain) very rapidly.


If the chain was replaced because of noise, it's wise to check the sprocket (which precludes use of the roll-in method). But if the chain was quiet - well, normal in sound - and it is being replaced because the tensioner shows the limit, the likelyhood of sprocket damage is much lower.

Unfortunately in the latter case, the condition of the balance chain remains unknown after rolling in the cam chain.
