IT is a bit too little information to tell whether the tranny is broken or not, especially considering it is a major outlay. First try anything else before starting to think about replacing.
ALWAYS state whether your tranny has the RIGHT amount of CLEAR fluid before going into any other speculations. If that is not ok, forget about any other possible causes until it is corrected.
Assuming all is well regarding fluid, I interpret you post as such that the engine starts revving when it tries to go to 4th grear. I agree with Bill that would indicate a (very) bad a-spring, which should be an easy fix.
