It's asking the obvious, but ....

Are your bulbs matched? I had similar problems when I first got my car (93 9k CD)in the middle of last year. The bulbs all looked the same, and had the correct wattages embossed in the metal stem, they all worked but the pictogram showed that my rear running lights were faulty. I mentioned this problem to my local independent mechanic when I took the car in for a service. He laughed, didn't check anything at all, just took out EVERY bulb in both rear-light units AND the central brake-light and then replaced them all with the appropriate bulbs all made by the same manufacturer. Problem gone!
I thought that he'd shifted something which had done the trick. He proved his point by taking out all the newly installed bulbs and putting back my original ones. They all worked, and so did the pictogram fault-light!
I can't figure it out, but I'm running with the new bulbs now, and no spurious fault-lights on the pictogram.
Anyone here got any explanation for this?
Steve
